Here are some screenshots from our recent transfer of MESSIAH OF EVIL, supervised by Willard Huyck!

Here are some screenshots of our recent transfer, taken from a recently discovered 35mm vault element, which was supervised and color corrected by the director Willard Huyck, and the editor of the film, Oscar nominee Billy Weber. As you can see, the major difference between our transfer and all those bootleg full frame DVD's is that we preserved the original scope aspect ratio. Mr. Huyck also worked on the colors to make sure it is seen the way he intended it to be seen. The director also let us know that this is his preferred cut, as this print omits that song he never wanted in the final cut. Director Huyck and Gloria Katz will be recording an audio commentary track next month, and we are scheduling the DVD release hopefully for May or June. as a 35th Anniversary Edition. Stay tuned for more info.

Wow, those screenshots look fantastic. Even just the widescreen upgrade is a gigantic improvement, not even taking into account the sharper image and colors.

One subject that I'm curious about, as far as the writer and director's opinions, is the Lovecraftian slant to the film. I wonder if this was intentional or not...

This is truly amazing. The pan and scan release just does not do this great movie justice. Thanks again Code Red for picking some of the best titles to give such great attention to!

And I agree with the director - the silly song is out of place and nearly ruins the spooky atmosphere the film works quite hard to (successfully) build up.

Awesome news. I heard somewhere that this release may not happen, glad to see it was a rumor.

Looking forward to this release.

Blu-ray, please? I'd like to see Code Red release a Blu-ray sometime.

DVD or Blu, either way, I'll pick this up when it it released. It was one of the better surprises I've had with a movie.

this is the best DVD news i've heard in a very long time!

Anonymous said...

Glad to see that dopey song removed from this DVD - but that being said, I think it should still be offered as a bonus extra for those of us who want to be reminded of what we used to have to put up with.

Better yet - why not offer it as a CD single in the package? It would come in real handy the next time someone has a party they need to break up - that number will send everybody running home!

EEEEEEEKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my favorite flicks in proper ratio and with a commentary!!! By the director!!! I'm ready NOW!

Anonymous said...

It's kind of funny that these images are squeezed - doesn't really give an impression of the actual viewing ratio?! Why is that? Or is there something wrong with my eyes?

Great release! Gonna get this for sure as soon as it comes out!

Anonymous said...

Great news, but I hope those screenshots aren't totally representative of the final DVD release, as they are seriously squeezed vertically, squashing faces out of shape! Looking forward to this film as I've always loved it for its weird Lovecraftian tone and bleak storyline.

Here's what Bill had to say about the images on Code Red's blog (from Horrordvds.com:

Hi,

not to worry, the DVD the lab burned for me, they burned it wrong, so it plays squished, I am trying to figure out how to take the screencap without it being squished. The lab assured me it is not squished. And remember, Willard Huyck supervised it himself, so no worries there. I think you will be impressed with the color scheme of this film, the way Willard intended for you to see.

Also, the check disc seems ot have this interlaced thing. but remember, the progressive scanning is during the encoding process, so the authoring house will encode this as a progressive scan disc.

Is this a slasher?

LOL, Anonymous.

Funny thing is, I can't tell if he/she is being funny and parodying, or if they really mean it. :(

Jack Fisk worked on this film, should try to interview him as his girlfriend at the time was Sissy Spacek and she, at that time and still to this day is close friends with the bloated, grotesquely overestimated David Lynch! So, it stands to reason that Sissy made "maestro" Lynch aware of the film and he obviously saw it as it clearly and blatantly influenced him on many levels, particularly regarding the disjointed, abstract, idiosyncratic delineations of all of the characters, particularly the morbid, retarded townsfolk. I personally feel that Lynch plagiarized this film in several ways.

Code Red, transfer looks great! But listen, aren't you aware that Navarre has shuted down BCI? What will this mean for Code Red? Will you'll be distributing upcoming BCI titles from now on? And, is it possible for you to get the rights to Peter Jackson's Meet The Feebles so you can release a 20th AE next year? Thanks for your cooperation. Can't wait to see what next you got up your sleeve. :)

looks good, but this clip below has some very bad "comb effect" in it. I guess this means won't be progressive scan. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RJpRWMEHUOc/ST4ua_z4UXI/AAAAAAAAAKY/RF4OAVNwLT4/s1600-h/vlcsnap-414915.png

Hmmm, I see you guys finally went out of business this week! Thanks heavens. Now a real DVD label with class like Dark Sky or Synapse or Severin will release The Redeemer. There is a god out there somewhere.

Go away, and take crap like this piece of zombie crap out of here. This is the most boring zombie film I have ever seen. I pray now for the other labels to release The Redeemer.

Anonymous said...

They never said they were going out of buisness. BCI is. But it's my concern if Code Red will stay in buisness or not. Also, BCI was going to release Kingdom Of The Spiders and fans want to know if Code Red will relase it as well as Messiah Of Evil. I don't want them to go out of buisness. Please give us an answer Code Red. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Fackud...is...'F*cked'

I hope you guys don't go out of business. You've been doing a great job for us fans, and you guys going out as well as BCI...would crush my soul. :P Somehow, there's truth in that sentence.

Anyways, here's to wishing you: luck!

Anonymous said...

Code Red shouldn't have focused on those Spanish horror titles.

Anonymous said...

It was BCI, not Code Red, that focused on those Spanish horror titles (which I assume you were referring to the Naschy discs, etc.) Although I was glad to get them, I do believe BCI probably spent way too much money on those titles and most likely they sold very poorly outside of their tiny niche following.

If Code Red doesn't continue their distribution deal with Navarre, hopefully they will link up with a new distrib soon, or just distribute their titles themselves directly.

Anonymous said...

Christ, Code Red, will you people pull your heads out of your asses when it comes to progressive scan? Back when Sole Survivor came out, it was not flagged for progressive. This was brought up on Horror Digital, and the Code Red guy said he was surprised and that it must have been a mishap during the disc authoring. He said he'd "look into it". Well, nothing happened. Fine, they can't afford to re-release the disc, so what. But now all these other discs of yours come out with the same fucking problem. We get a bunch of tacky Best Buy exclusive stuff with bad spelling but progressive scan is just lost on you guys I guess. Embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

Yes, all their dVD are interlaced nightmares. Wankers. And who makes their covers, people who can;t spell worth shit, worthless label,

Mr. Smith said...

how many titles that code red released had a "best buy exclusive" ?
i know dead pit did, but which others if any ?

also why the fuck do people keep complaining about spelling errors
what do you watch the movie or the cover ??

Anonymous said...

I think these spelling error guys kick there dog after a tough day at jack in the box. code red packs there dvds with more features than any current label, why does everyone here have to bitch?

Anonymous said...

NONE of you can write or spell properly because your brains have been softened by too many fucking MOVIES. It's admittedly kind of disturbing.

Hate to be critical, but the progressive scan criticisms are justified and valid.

;)

Anonymous said...

"The Dead Pit" and "Beyond the Door" both have Best Buy exclusive 2-disc editions.

The spelling and grammatical errors I was referring to can be found in the supplemental features themselves; the type during the interviews, often in the form of a question being asked of the interviewee, is all over the place. Harmless, maybe, but still rather amateurish.

And yes, the interlaced transfers are ridiculous for 2008 releases and I have yet to hear any sort of explanation from CR. If they're not going to do anything about it, they should at least say so.

Unlike many of you, I don't feel that digging up obscure films only to completely half-ass the production of the disc should earn them automatic praise. It's no different than those Alpha releases, really.

And by the way, "Beyond the Door" should have gone on to BU, Mondo Macabro, or Severin, someone who could actually handle the thing with care. That is all.

insaniac said...

What is half-ass about CR's "BEYOND THE DOOR"? Nothing - it looks great and has a bunch of extras to boot. Comparing Code Red to Alpha (which is a cheap public-domain label that does no remastering at all and no extras) is absolutely ridiculous and quite stupid. You must be a rep for BU, Synapse, or Severin to even try to imply that. Any real authentic fan of these films knows you are full of shit. You should be thrilled CR even delivers these films in remastered top-quality DVD format, much less with extras and so forth. If you're not, go watch your cheap EP-mode Video Treasures VHS release of BTD and shut the f' up. Idiot!

I never noticed any spelling errors in any menus, but I honestly wasn't really looking and don't care about such trivial matters. Give me a widescreen remastered good-looking print of the uncut film - that's what I want - and Code Red delivered that.

Code Red - please ignore these trolls who have no life and bitch because their panties are too tight and they can't deal with a word being misspelled somewhere. Keep giving us these films in the excellent transfers you continue to deliver.

Peace - out!

Anonymous said...

OK Mr Insanic, answer this, name me one label who has all, that's right, all their releases interlaced? None! HOT MOVES, BEYOND THE DOOR, DON'T GO IN THE WOODS, DEVIL TIMES FIVE are all interlaced nightmares! Troma Discs looks so much better.

And Willard Huyck must be getting up in age to do such a horrible job doing a interlaced transfer.Look at the awful colors!

But then again, what do we expect from the guy who brought us HOWARD THE DUCK! Man needs to get his eyes examined.

Willard, Go back to the hole you crawled out of, and take this crappy movie with you! No one wants it, and screw you for removing the song.

You suck, glad to hear BCI and you guys are history! BCI too, with their interlaced crap like SAVAGE STREETS, good riddence! Code Red, you are a ass wipe!

Anonymous said...

You Sux.

Anonymous said...

Code red could just stop releasing new movies and become Elites dump bin like synapse or just continue to re-release crap like BU. I hope they dont!

Anonymous said...

Hey Bitul! Those are some bitter words you have for BCI. You must be competition happy to see another great label fall. Sad,sad that people have to do this.

On a lighter note ,Messiah looks gorgeous!

Anonymous said...

Guess some folks missed the post near the beginning of this thread where Bill Norton stated pretty clearly that Messiah of Evil will not be interlaced.

That is all.

Anonymous said...

The nerd shit around here is a bit sad. Someone mentioned too many movies must make one's mind soft. I have seen many movies, though I have to agree, there must be something in the water somewhere, or in it beng a person's #1 hobby. I don't know..... I love movies, but some fo this bicthing is overboard. Different strokes for different folks.....

Someone in this thread mentioned video treasures.. 10-15 years ago, I paid, from what I recalll, at least $10 for EP speeed shit from video treasures (Lifeforce sticks out). Similar price for EP speed Horror Express.

Still, I enjoyed them.

Code Red has been OK by me. How else would I watch Sole Survior? VHS? Fuck yeah, bring A DVD on, at $10 or less (Deep Discount). Adjusted for inflation, it's still less than many video treasure or other EP Speed tapes that I no lopnger own.

It can't look any worse than the stairstepped, "Just Before Dawn" from ____ Ugh, that's once I'd rather watch the VHS of. Media Blasters has MANY good releases, but Just Before Dawn DVD on a large screen... bring on the Paragon VHS.

Interlace issues or not, I'm still happy to see the movie on a RECENT format, rather than lingering in the past on VHS.

Yes, pregoressive is good. So is anamorphic. But at this year (2008), I'm not going to comlpain much when it cost $10 or so. I can always rent it.

Perhaps some folks have too much time on their hands?

Anonymous said...

This is one of those Romero zombi knock off rip off films, stay away!

Anonymous said...

What the hell is interlaced anyway? I love all the code red stuff I have.

Anonymous said...

Just surfed in and checked through about a year of blogs and just had to ask...

WHO ARE YOU IDIOTS????

I've never seen so much immature, childish bullshit in my life. Everyone screaming about a single film they want as if Code Red is supposed to drop everything just because "Anonymous" wants THIS film really bad (but also done perfectly with tons of extras, as if that takes no time at all).

I've waited a long time for "Nightmare", I'd love to see "The Redeemer" uncut, but am I on here screaming at Code Red cause it's not happening as fast as I'd like it to?

It's amazing us horror fans have a company that not only focuses on obscure and "cult" films for hardcore fans but has a blog to post updates, screenshots, etc. (really, how many companies do you see doing that?) and fans just slap them in the face with vile posts and childish insults.

Either this site, for some reason, is polluted with retarted 12 year olds or it's one single loser on the computer all day trying to start shit.

By the way, if you hate Code Red so much, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING ON THEIR SITE???

Do you go to theatres and watch films you have no interest in just so you can complain about them later? Do you go see bands you don't like in concert just so you can boo them? I doubt it.

So why do you keep coming here all the time and post this bullshit? Is your life really so empty you have to constantly visit a site for a company you hate just to constantly tell them they suck?

I have to say, I almost feel sorry for you.

Anonymous said...

zmbdog -

I pretty much said all the same arguments many months ago against this idiot(s) troll and why he would continue to post on a site he hates, but the moron just keeps on going so that shows you how high his IQ must be. He disappears for a bit here and there, but like all types of diarrhea, he will always return to smell up the place. It's easy to tell when it's him - the grammar, the overuse of certain words and terms, the juvenile tone, etc. Sometimes even The Redeemer comes up.

I wouldn't want any forum to be completely edited by its moderators as it is always nice to have a fair conversation amongst all, but when a troll is so obviously out there just to sabotage and nothing else, I sometimes wonder why CR keeps this forum open in the first place.

If anything, I guess that just shows how CR does appreciate and care for the fans - to keep an open discourse available even with this psychotic negative idiot. I can't imagine any other DVD label putting up with such imbecilic and juvenile comments on their own site? Thanks Code Red for rising above the lunacy!!!

Anonymous said...

^That's how I ended up here. I googled The Redeemer with Code Red cuz I have no idea what's going on with the release and ended up on a Dec. '07 blog with "crypt-something" who seemed to believe this film was God's gift to the world!

I looked through most of the blogs since that date and read the comments and I have to say I doubt anyone from CR actually reads these anymore cuz this place is absolutley polluted with raving loons.

I'd love for this site to have a true forum, it's certainly active enough, c'mon Messiah of Evil now has 43 comments and most of them have nothing to do with the film :) (plus the idiotic losers here could be banned), but I have no idea how to contact anyone actually involved in this site.

And, like I said, I doubt they even bother looking at the comments anymore.

Anonymous said...

Best dvd news of the year for me! One of the best horror films ever done in america. Sounds like an absolute dream release! My only additional wish would be a little interview with Marianna Hill. I think she's fantastic in the film and somehow she has a similar mysterious aura as Barbara Steele (she did some other interesting stuff like Ted Posts THE BABY etc.)

Anonymous said...

I think Code Red should just be bought out by Alpha Video. Alpha releases superior product in every way.

Also, they should release more slashers.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, I think Alpha would have handled Messiah of Evil much better than Code Red, they would do much better with the transfers, please join BCI and close.

Anonymous said...

Code red ,Synapse films and Mondo Macabro all have blogs that are open to the public . In a way I think these trolls should have no voice anywhere with this meanspirited shite. That said, atleast they dont delete comments and censor you like the Synapse blog does if you say something negative. Be critical if you have to but calm the fuck down. Looking forward to the releases Code red!!

Anonymous said...

I agree that their DVD's are horrible! I purchased their so called BEYOND THE DOOR special edition, bought it at Amazon for 8 bucks, and instead of this so called deluxe edition, I got a DVD-R with HORRIBLE picture quality, which was also INTERLACED, was NOT 16 x 9, and to top it all off, what extras? THERE WAS NO EXTRAS whatsoever! I HAVE seen BETTER picture quality on Alpha and Mill Creek!

I am convinced those who reviewed it are on their payroll for this DVD contained no extras they mentioned! FRAUD! CROOKS! How DARE you rip off consumers you bastards!

Wanna bet MESSIAH OF EVIL will be the same? Jerk Off! BEYOND THE DOOR should have went to Dark Sky or Severin or NoShame! The treatment this title gotten was an abomination!

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 8:40 PM, Angry Red Penus, and Grappati are soooo the same person, it's not even funny.

Monster trolls. :(

I have great respect for code red and think they are a great company , however I am getting a bit fed up of the donkey & carrot theory. By this i mean they have promised many many releases but are not delivering , just making us collectors salivate at the idea of owning the following code red promises - Nightmare Maker , The Nesting , Terror Circus , Spasms , Nightmare in a damaged brain , Trapped , Messiah of Evil , powerplay , pets , velvet trap , running hot , the farmer , mutilator (uncut) , tese are only a few of their promises - I wonder if these will ever get released , screen caps are just screen caps - give the collector's what they want please - the actual DVDs , I mean this with upmost respect ofcourse.

Anonymous said...

Carrot theory... 28-12 12:20am

I remember all the bitching people gave about Synapse holding off on the Street Trash release due to wanting to finish the documentary. They eventually gave in, and released a movie only release.

Not everything will happen, though I'm sure much of it will.

People seem to bitch no matter what. As long as I receive the DVD, and it looks better than the VHS release (if applicable), and the price is decent, I'm good.

Sometimes this thread is sad, even my contributing to it, hahaha. Time for a break.

Anonymous said...

If you go to their main web site, you can pre-book two of the titles you mentioned, TERROR CIRCUS and RUNNING HOT, thru Amazon, so those are coming out very soon. I already pre-booked mine, but with the demise of BCI, I am worried about their future schedule.

Anonymous said...

Terror Circus is still coming out? I thought LEGEND FILMS bootleg operation killed that with there bootleg release.

Anonymous said...

I think Code Red should release "Scream" and not make it interlaced.

Also, I bought "Beyond the Door" from Amazon.Com and I opened the box to find a banana instead. Fucking crackpot label, I hope they go out of business.

Anonymous said...

At least you gotta banana. I would have put a nice nutty turd in your box.You might eat the nuts though..so maybe not. Itd be quite watery ,I gaurantee

Anonymous said...

I heard from the horrordvds.com forums that Code Red is still in buisness! That means, that Code Red won;t be going out of buisness! So, for all the haters, Ha. Ha. Screw. You. To me and the supporters, this is but great news indeed! Code Red, you truly deserve a rank in greatest DVD companies of all time! Again, I was wondering if getting the rights to Peter Jackson's Meet The Feebles to release a 20th AE is still in order? Thanks again.

I read on horrordvds.com that Code Red is being sued by Mountain Dew / Pepsi for copyright infringement. I hope they lose.

There are hundreds!!!!!

Code Red your dvds are second to none

I agree with the above poster.

Code Red, your DVDs are second to none on a rival list. You really are the second best or best horror DVD company out there.

Code Red, I hate your dvds and think you are a pitiful excuse for a label. Here's hoping you go straight out of business in 2009!

Hey Code Red, it's opposite day!

Therefore you probably thought that the above poster 'hates' your DVDs. No. He 'loves' them. As do I.

Or should I say, I 'hate' your films. Unhappy opposite day!

A non-fan, :)

This is a correction re: "Messiah of Evil" from Willard Huyck. The Code Red release contains a serious omission. Billy Weber was one of TWO distinguished editors who worked with me on "Messiah of Evil". The other principal editor was Morgan Fisher, who went on from this film to have a noteworthy career as an experimental filmmaker and teacher. I sat next to Morgan for months at his Movieola (it was that long ago) as he worked his magic trying to piece together a film we actually never finished shooting. Morgan also personally directed a classic "insert" in "Messiah of Evil", the famous shot of Anitra Ford's feet as she stamps on the automatic doormat of the supermarket -- and the door won't open -- which means that she gets eaten by ghouls. Without Morgan Fisher there would be no "Messiah of Evil", which he may or may not want to be written on his tombstone. And yes, there are Lovecraftian overtones in the movie because I was a fan of H.P.'s work.

Unknown said...

I forgot Morgan Fisher's other major contribution to "Messiah of Evil"! Morgan played the effete art shop assistant. This was his screen debut, but he performed like an old pro and delivered an incredibly memorable performance which the Academy sadly overlooked.

Anonymous said...

Apparently the transfer people didn't know that Morgan Fisher edited the movie along with Billy Weber. They should be more careful about the notes they publish with their self- promotions.

Anonymous said...

"Anonymous" defends this blog by saying something to the effect that the "Synapse Blog" removes comments that are negative. I don't know those folks over at Synapse, but at least they don't post "anonymously" on their own blog to act like fans and stick up for themselves. What Code Red does on their own blog is pretty obvious.

But, that being said, I'm personally looking forward to seeing MESSIAH OF EVIL. I saw it theatrical in NYC a few years ago and really didn't like it much, but I think I need to give it another chance. The print I saw was horrible. Hopefully COde Red can do something to make it beautiful.

(Way overdue -- but still.)

I had always hoped against hope that Mr. Huyck would someday oversee a proper sendoff for his "prodigal son".

Thank you, Willard.
Look forward to it.

Will it include a more complete "Dawn of the Dead" disembowling of Anita Ford? One can only hope. :-)

Absolute bliss! I have championed a proper DVD release for years as a writer on Monsters at Play! I had the good fortune of seeing "Messiah" at the drive-in as a youngster and never forgot the impact that it made on me! So happy to see the scenes restored to their original aspect ratio after having to deal with those horrible public domain versions for so long! Mr. Huyck and Ms. Katz made a haunting, lyrical film that I hope is rediscovered after this long-awaited DVD release. Just FYI: I have always liked that Raun Mackinnon song! I do hope that it's included in some fashion. Thanks Code Red!!!!

This is an "open post" to Mr. Huyck, who was nice enough to offer some thoughts in this comment section a few months ago. Code Red recently announced the release dates for several of their titles but, sadly, "Messiah of Evil" was not mentioned. From the number of posts on this thread it's clear that several people are interested in this title. The last I heard was that the DVD might be released this summer. Do you have any information regarding a release? Also, are there any plans to present your cut theatrically? Thanks so much for making such a memorable film!
